why they do it

I have been studying human nature my whole life and following poliics in great detail since I was a child. It's been plenty long enough to recognize trends and motives. As the nation is dragged through the mud once again by Consetvatives, this time on the Sotomayor nomination, people are tempted to ask why they viciouly smear such a qualified candidate? Its easy The reasons they do this are the reasons have done everything in their sad history.

1. PROJECTION- Conservatives have always projected thier fears and their dark desires on others. They know that they want hareful ideologues in power -look at their record. So they believe that no matter the facts, that must be the secret goal of Obama. It's not. They are projecting their own motives on others. Again.

2. WORK THE REFS- Conservatives always plan ahead. Hey- if you want to appoint a radical racist to the Supreme Court why not call the Democratic nominee one!?! That way 4 or 8 or 12 years down the road they can say "well you let one racist on so we could too". There is a method to their smears and myth building. They know what they are doing and they have done it many times in the past. That's what they are doing now.

3. PANDER TO THE BASE- Those remaining in the Conservative movement fall into 3 camps. These camps must be stroked. Camp 1: The wealthy and powerful - they are calling the shots and therefore tax breaks and economic policies which benefit the super rich are always on the table. Camp 2: The Followers - you can be religious and still have a nimble mind. But many feel comfortable in the narrow intellectual spectrum offered by church leaders and talk show hosts. These poor folks must have the Conservative myth constantly reinforced lest the real world shatter the fantasy. Camp 3: the Rednecks - let's face it. There are still a lot of hateful idiots out there. They are Republican voters and need their red meat daily.

So. When you wonder why Newt, Dick and Rush say what they do, you now have the reasons. They are pandering to their base and planning for their misbehavior in the future. If you want to know the inner workings and the secret desires of a Conservative look at the wild accusations they make toward others. Just like anti- gay right wingers in bathroom stalls across America, they are angry because they are jealous. They accuse others of the terrible things they would like to do themselves. There is a long and documented history of this. It has not changed and may never.

Mark, I can't agree with this one on several levels.

The smearing of Sotomayor is wrong. So too were the smears on Thomas or Scalia or Alito, et al. It's part of the game. Not unique to conservatives attacking liberals. More than anything, it seems to me, the negative words by people like Rush are motivated by revenge.

That doesn't make it right. But let's not act like it's a one way street either.

As to your 3 items. You are definitely right about #2. And of course that is part of the game. One that both sides use. As to #1 and #3, that may be true of some. But your very descriptions included in #3 indicate you somewhat doing the same thing but in reverse. Isn't it pandering to a different audience to discount critics in such a manner?

All that said, I understand how the attacks would fire you up. I felt the same way when Clarence Thomas was (and is) attacked for things others than his judicial record. I hope Sotomayor is treated fairly, and respectfully, and we move on without much harm. We shall see.
