Near Miss

An eventful morning today. I went out for a walk from my apartment to 125th Street which is the "city center" of Harlem. I took my normal route that I go to work each day - up Lennox avenue right past my deli where I get a hero almost everyday.

About 2 minutes before I walked in front of the deli a terrible accident occurred. Someone jumped the curb with their car, struck at least 1 pedestrian and then knocked out the base of the scaffolding which was there.
The entire construction apparatus collapsed sending mountains of steel and cement to the ground. When I rushed up there there were clearly people trapped underneath and about a dozen passersby fanatically trying to hold up steel beams so they wouldn't crush the people below.

The rescue squad got there immediately and took away the wounded people. I felt pretty lucky not to be in the wrong place at the wrong time. A couple minutes earlier and I certainly would've been dodging a car or construction debris. NY1 has a summary with video

It was a great afternoon besides that. The weather is WARM. I was shocked! The temperature is near 70 and the sun is shining brightly. Just 5 days ago we had a blizzard. The oddest thing was seeing huge piles of snow still on the sidewalk as people wearing shorts strolled by and twisted metal and cement littered the walkway.

In 1979! when living in New York I loved March when you would get a spring warm up after a big Snow. So you could play in Snow in your Shorts.
