Can We (not) Talk

The Republican strategy of preventing intelligent debate through angry intimidation and the shouting down of those they disagree with has a long history. Most will remember the "Brooks Brothers Riot" in Florida which shut down the 2000 election recount and gave us George W. Bush as President. But it started even before then. The author of this article says here was there in 1992 when it all began.

If you cannot win a debate on fact, and the conservative movement which has always been built on myths has never been able to do this, then you try to stop the debate. They have no respect for dialog, no respect for a discussion of the issues and no respect for Democracy! The GOP is simply using mob rule to close down our Constitutionally designed tools for governing.

There is room for debate on the issues of the day. In fact, there is a real need for such a debate! But to shout down speakers, to spread ridiculus lies, intentionally prevents this crucial element of a civil society.

First some spacial data; the press gallery inside the enormous dome was to the right of the podium, about 15 feet above the convention floor.
