There is a huge controversy surrounding this cartoon which was in the New York Post yesterday.
That’s good news!
It’s good because pretty much everyone has expressed their disgust at the racist and violent tone of the cartoon.
What I want to point out that this cartoon, as shocking and disgusting as it is, comes as no surprise. The New York Post is an important part of the right wing media. It’s owned by none other than Ruppert Murdoch, who runs FOX News and funds all kinds of other so called conservative media across the globe. The cartoon is a natural part of the master plan.
Murdoch, a native of Australia, started purchasing unsuccessful newspapers in his home country, in the UK and finally the USA. In all cases he redesigned the publication to appeal to the under educated. The writing is simple - perfect for those who are not exceptional readers - and the content is steered to getting these folks to follow policies which benefit the super rich. It’s always been a very simple plan. Get the very people who would benefit from government protection and oversight and serendipitously, over the course of months and years, indoctrinate them to hate the very forces designed to protect them. Using racism or religious beliefs and fears is merely a handy tool for them to use to incite emotion, dismiss logic and achieve their goal of getting the most vulnerable to support the most able.
Talk radio is another part of the puzzle of course. The same people that run and fund the NY Post and FOX news, worked to put “movement conservatives” like Rush Limbaugh behind the mic and they make sure there is always plenty of advertising dollars funneled to these shows to keep them on the air. Again, the goal is to have these people pose as “everymen” - hardworking salt of the earth Americans. In fact, they are paid shills for super-capitalists who find this method the most cost effective way of keeping the poor and uneducated fighting with them instead of against them.
So the cartoon in the Post is no surprise. They want to weaken Obama and his policies and if they have to occasionally push the buttons of the racists out there they will. The good part of this is that more and more people now recognize this and reject it outright. Undoubtedly, there are still many who drink the kool-aid - listen to any call in show and behold the complete lack of facts and logic from some callers on the right. But that number is declining, not growing and the widespread repudiation of this horrible cartoon is evidence of that.
